Therapeutic Adventures, Inc. is a non-profit organization committed to providing greater access to adaptive outdoor recreation for persons of all ages who have a disability (physical or developmental), a chronic illness, or other special health needs. With the goal to improve the quality of life of all persons, our unique and integrative approach to adaptive outdoor recreation (Adaptive Water Sports, Adaptive Snow Sports, and Adaptive Wilderness Sports) is broken down into three service areas:

  • Outdoor Independence Training Centers - Provides a variety of adaptive outdoor recreation instructional programs, special camps, and other educational/therapeutic supports services.
  • Adaptive Outdoor Safety Council - An educational resource to assist individuals, families, healthcare professionals and adaptive outdoor service providers. Promotes: safety, education and leadership, as well as stewardship and protection of the outdoor environments where adaptive activities are offered and enjoyed.
  • Freedom Outdoors - Provides assistive technology, adaptive outdoor equipment, safety products outdoor gear & specialty products to help individuals achieve greater functional independence in the outdoors.

Fly Fishing Instruction for the Disabled
We can provide custom ½ Day or Full Day Sessions - (Private Semi-Private) Adaptive Fly Fishing Guiding & Instruction on the beautiful Thomas Jefferson Trout Unlimited (TJTU) Catch & Release section of the Moorman's River.
Note: Depending upon age and type of disability, some Adaptive Anglers may be exempt from certain fishing license/permit requirements. Please inquire.

SEA KAYAKING, CAMPING, HIKING, BIRD WATCHING, SHELLING
COURSE RATING: (Phase 1 - Beginner)
VA. - CHINCOTEAGUE/ASSATEAGUE ISLAND
Back by popular demand - this is our classic 2-day and 2 night trip to explore the unique environment and culture of a protected Eastern Shore Island wilderness refuge on the beautiful Delmarva Peninsula.

Participants will enjoy paddling through the tidal marshes with an abundance migrating birds and waterfowl that make their home around Chincoteague and Assateague. Dependent on weather, we will offer either a sunrise or sunset paddling excursion.

We will hike in search of the famous Chincoteague wild horses; we will go shelling and explore some of the unique culture and history of this island community. We will eat some Eastern Shore seafood, and famous island treats. This is a great trip - Our campsite overlooks the beautiful Assateague lighthouse.

Sea Kayakers/Campers will become familiar with:

  • Orientation and care of kayaking equipment
  • Paddling techniques
  • Leave No Trace - Outdoor Ethics
  • Safety Skills in the outdoors

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. -

Fly Fishing Camp for the Disabled

Anglers/Campers will become familiar with:
Thomas Jefferson Trout Unlimited
  • Orientation and care of fly fishing equipment
  • Casting techniques
  • Basic aquatic entomology --What do trout like to eat?
  • Fly tying
  • Catch and Release Ethics
  • Leave No Trace - Outdoor Ethics
  • Safety Skills in the outdoors

Provided in partnership with Thomas Jefferson Trout Unlimited and BSA, Troop 7, this 2-day and 2 night camp is a favorite. Fly fishing on the beautiful Moorman's River with base camp at the adjacent Sugar Hollow Campground.
